Considering a Whippet?

devo.jpg

Devo and his new best friend Shawn

Most whippets are very good with kids, but no dog of any breed should be left alone with young children. Think of your dog as a pair of scissors ... you wouldn't leave your toddler alone with them, but under supervision, she'll learn to use them correctly. Under supervision, both your child and your dog will learn to play together safely and happily. Please see Toddlers & Dogs for some very useful information!

chase_06-16-2010.jpgPlanning a vacation? We are pleased to offer petsitting services to our friends and family. At Timbreblue Whippet Camp, your dog will be cared for 24/7 by whippet owners/breeders with over 15 years of experience with all kinds of whippets and other dogs. We offer two kinds of petsitting -- in our home or in your own home.

Petsitting in our home -- Camp Timbreblue

Derek and Johannah are based in South Carolina (at Timbreblue South) and provide pick-up and drop-off service all along the East coast. We will travel up to 6 hours from Columbia, SC for pick-up and delivery (we do charge for gas). For Timbreblue Whippet Camp, we charge $20 per day per dog1 for round-the-clock care (discounts available for three or more dogs), which includes the cost of food2. You are also welcome to send your own food if you prefer, or we can pick up a bag for you2. We can even handle raw food if that is what your dogs prefer3.

Petsitting in your own home

We also offer petsitting in your own home with 24/7 care. This service is particularly useful for families going on vacation for 5+ days. Johannah will travel to your home and care for your pets in your home for $75 per day with a discount of 10% for 5+ days. This rate covers up to three dogs and three cats or other small pets in the home. Additional pets are $2 per pet, per day.

About Us:

Derek and Johannah work at home as web designers, so one or both of us is always home 24/7. Our household is very dog-friendly and we only use crates occasionally -- for the most part we are crate-free. We have five whippets of our own of various ages, so playmates are always available. We make it a point to maintain an atmosphere in our home that is relaxed and happy. We are NOT a kennel but a family environment, so your dogs will be housed in our home with our own dogs. We do have indoor cats, but they have their own "cat suite" so we can keep them put away while your dogs are staying with us if they are not cat-friendly.

About Our Home:

Our yard is fully fenced, with a 6' secure wooden privacy fence. We perform weekly fence checks to ensure the integrity of our fencing and to check for any digging. Our yard is mostly open with a few large trees for shade. We generally do short monitored outside times (we have a variety of tennis balls, frisbees, and other outside toys). It's pretty warm in South Carolina during much of the year -- of course fresh water is always available in a HUGE (15 gallon) bucket and is changed daily.

vi_cozycave2.jpgInside is very dog friendly. We allow dogs on all of the furniture, all covered with soft blankets and slipcovers. There are also cozy caves and dog beds throughout the house. At night your dogs have options. They can sleep in the bed with Jo and the other whippets, or sleep in a cozy cave or big fluffy dog bed on the floor. We have carbon filtered water fountains in every room which have fresh water changed daily.

We also keep two Great Dane sized crates which are always open in case your dog wants some "alone time". The crates have big fluffy dog beds and water buckets. We DO NOT crate dogs unless your dog prefers to eat or sleep in a crate. If any personality conflicts arise, our home is large enough to divide dogs into different rooms.

rainey_chewie_06-16-2010.jpgToys and Chewies:

We keep a large variety of chewies, treats, and bones on hand for the dogs, and can accommodate your dog's preferences.

We can also restrict certain treats if you have rules for your dogs. We generally allow our dogs access to various treats and chewies throughout the day (such as hooves, knuckle bones, and larger twisted rawhide bones) and offer one "special" treat at night after dinner such as a pig ear, rawhide bone, cow ear, raw bone, etc. We can divide the dogs into different rooms for treat time if any of your dogs is "protective" of treats.

If your dog prefers "raw treats" such as chicken necks, chicken feet, marrow bones, etc. we can provide those as well. There is a small additional charge for raw treats, please ask.

We also have a large assortment of stuffed squeaky tones, cloth toys, Nylabones, rope toys, etc available in baskets throughout the house. You can send along toys of your own if you'd like, and we'll inventory your toys and belongings when they arrive and will make sure they go home with you.

chiphenry_04-19-10.jpgFood & Supplements:

We feed the dogs twice a day and can keep your dogs on their regular schedule for feeding times. We generally feed the dogs loose, and divide them into different rooms using tall baby gates. We can separate your dog if she/he is protective of food or a picky eater, or feed in a crate if she/he is accustomed to that. We have available a variety of supplements, vitamins, and there is a specialty dog food store five minutes away so we can get a bag of any specialty dog food that you feed2.

Veterinary/Medical Care:

We have an excellent veterinary practice located 15 minutes from us who are AAHA accredited, and we have a great relationship with them. We also have an AAHA accredited emergency veterinary practice 10 minutes from us. They provide great quality care and they are open 24/7/365. We are also experienced with providing medications or special care for your dogs if needed (Jo has experience as a vet tech and Derek is very adept at convincing dogs that pills are tasty in Pill Pockets, cheese, or peanut butter!). We can administer monthly medications such as heartworm pills or flea/tick preventative at no additional cost unless you need us to purchase the medications as well.

luna_06-16-2010.jpgSafety & Security:

We put a stretchy velcro collar on your dogs upon their arrival with tags containing our address and phone number. These collars are safe in the yard because they are designed to stretch pull off easily if the dogs grab each other by the collars. We live in a quiet neighborhood on a side street with very little traffic.

Keeping in Touch:

You are welcome to call or text anytime to check on your dogs, or we can set up a time for a phone call at regular intervals to check in. We will send a daily text or email (or both) with an update. We also take lots of photos and videos of the dogs and will be happy to send them to you as well as posting them on our website.

Availability:

Please contact us for doggy care references or if you are interested in finding out our availability for your dogs' care. We generally keep only one family's dogs at a time, or dogs that are known to get along together (such as family friends) so availability is limited.
