How
Much Does a Puppy from a Breeder Cost?
Unlike other purchases, the price is just about
the last question you should when shopping for a puppy. There are
so many other issues that are more important that by the time you
arrive at "talking price," you'll have most likely made
your decision. Within a breed, you probably won't find a responsible
breeder who is wildly out of line from the others in the area. Trying
to save a few dollars on the purchase of a puppy is nearly always
false economy. Learn the average
price for a puppy of your chosen breed before you begin talking
to breeders, but don't worry too much about the precise "bottom
line" until you've covered some other bases.
Consider the purchase of a shirt. You can buy
a quality shirt, well-constructed of good fabric. You'll have that
shirt for years. Or you can buy a factory second of a cheaper line.
Trouble is, the seams aren't even, the hem comes out, and the whole
thing falls apart after washing. You may love that cheap shirt just
as much as you would have loved the good one, but you're going to
spend money having it repaired, time handwashing it to keep it from
falling apart...and chances are, it's not going to last as long
as the better quality one.
Try amortizing the cost. Divide the price of
a well-bred puppy by the number of years you expect him to live.
Whatever the price, it's not much on a per-month basis!
This section deals very honestly with what
it costs a breeder to produce a litter and how much you can expect
to pay for a companion puppy. Near the bottom of the page is a chart
with average prices of many breeds in the United States.
Puppy prices vary somewhat from region to region,
though those differences are slowly disappearing. The internet is
bringing people closer together and more people are willing to travel
some distance to buy a puppy. Still, prices of some breeds are slightly
higher in the northeast and on the west coast.
