Do
You Really Want a Dog?
A dog is a very
big commitment, and there's no shame in deciding you're not
ready for it. A dog is a living, feeling creature who will
be totally dependent on you for his life and happiness. He's
not a household appliance you can trade in when you are bored,
too busy or just want a newer model. The time and money involved
are substantial, and if you're lucky, your dog will be with
you for anywhere from ten to 17 years.
Only about one
dog out of three will spend his life with the same family;
many of the rest will be taken to an animal shelter. Of dogs
turned in to shelters, only one of four comes out alive. The
decision to acquire a dog should be considered very carefully.
If the timing is off, if you're not sure exactly what you
want, if next year would really be better...then wait. Spend
some time with your friends' dogs. Volunteer at a shelter.
