Sometimes
people want dogs for reasons that aren't very practical or realistic.
One of the common reasons I heard when I worked at the shelter
was "to grow up with my baby". That's not a bad reason
unless the owner has been watching too many Lassie re-runs.
Not all dogs are content to follow a child around the neighborhood
prepared to save the kid from speeding freight trains and wild
boars. And few will race home to bark at mom "Come quick,
Timmy's in trouble!!"
The puppy isn't
going to magically turn into a well behaved companion for
anyone if the parents don't put some effort into training.
And it is very time consuming and energy draining to chase
after a toddler and a puppy.
Some people want
a dog for security. Another good reason for getting a dog,
as long as it's your bedroom you want guarded. People who
get a dog and put it out in the back yard often find that
the barking, howling and digging get in the way a peaceful,
secure sleep. Besides, all good burglars know that you only
have to open the gate, let the dog run out and then close
the gate behind you.
The ones that have
their hearts in the right place but their brains disengaged
are the ones that think they're going to replace their childhood
dog. They forget the role their parents played in training,
footing the medical and feed bills, etc. Also, no one's childhood
dog can ever be replaced. That dog was too perfect.
The reason I want
a dog is because my life is better and I'm happier when I'm
sharing my time with one, or two or three.
